Hypnosis FAQ

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind. Everyone has already experienced hypnosis either by accident or by appointment! We use this commonly occurring and natural state of mind, unknowingly, all the time. It is just natural for us. Have you ever driven down the road, with your mind focused elsewhere, and next thing you know you've missed your turn? That's called "highway hypnosis". Have you ever been so focused on a good movie that when the villain jumps out of the shadows and onto the hero, you startle and jump in your seat? That's another example of focused attention....and hypnosis.

What Hypnosis Is Not

Hypnosis is NOT voodoo, magic or mind control. A hypnotist CAN NOT makes you do anything you do not want to do! You are always in control! You are always free to open your eyes, get up off the chair and walk out of the office. Hypnosis is always your choice. I liken the relationship of the hypnotist and client to a road trip. The client is the driver and the hypnotist is the map-reader. The hypnotist is there to guide you along your path, but ultimately, the client chooses which way to go. And finally, hypnosis is NOT sleep. If you fall asleep, it is an expensive nap! Hypnotists do use the word "sleep." Sleep here means..." as if you were asleep at night, eyes closed and body calm and relaxed."

How do you define hypnosis?

The U.S. government defines hypnosis as having two parts: (1) the bypass of the critical factor, and (2) the establishment of acceptable selective thinking.

This "bypass of the critical factor" simply means the release of limiting beliefs. The use of hypnosis for anesthesia has been accepted by the American Medical Association since 1958. It is a well-established fact. However, if you have the limiting belief that the mind cannot create a powerful anesthesia, you will be unable to do so. In hypnosis, this limiting belief can be bypassed, and hypnotic anesthesia can be quickly created.

"The establishment of acceptable selective thinking," is the second part of the definition. This part of the definition refers to the process of guiding someone into hypnosis by using a hypnotic induction. The establishment of selective thinking creates the mental environment or state of mind that enables you to reject limiting beliefs. In this case, the beliefs you learned by daily life and society. Once these limiting beliefs are rejected, you can accept new more empowering ones.

Who can be hypnotized?

Anyone of normal intelligence, without significant mental illness, who can follow instructions and who wants to be hypnotized ... can be hypnotized.

What do you mean "without significant mental illness"?

I refer to individuals with a mental health diagnosis, under the care of a mental health professional, and taking medications for a specific mental health diagnosis (i.e. Bipolar Disorder, Severe Depression, Schizophrenia, OCD). These individuals need to discuss the hypnosis option with their mental health professional. Hypnosis is very powerful. Please note that there are mental health professionals who use hypnosis. These practitioners are experienced in assessing and treating clients with mental health issues, special needs and vital ongoing support.

How do I find an experenced hypnotist?

Finding information on the Internet has become second nature to us! By searching for "hypnosis" and "your home town and state" you will find qualified hypnotists. The hypnotist should be certified and in good standing by either the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) or the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). First impressions are telling! Don’t be afraid to ask the hypnotist questions. Schedule an appointment with a hypnotist with whom you feel comfortable.

How can hypnosis make changes in my life?

The hypnotic state can set aside your limiting beliefs that may have been preventing you from moving toward a more healthy, and happy you.

Who can benefit from hypnosis?

Any individual who wants to improve some aspect of their health and wellbeing for the better.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis feels as if you are listening to a calm voiced someone on the telephone with your eyes closed!

What can I expect from being hypnotized?

While in hypnosis, clients have reported either feeling heavy and pushed into the chair, or light and airy, as if they are floating above the chair. A majority of clients report feeling comfortably flushed, warm, calm and relaxed.

What is hypnosis used for?

Hypnosis can be used for a variety of concerns, problems, fears, phobias and habits. The mind is very powerful! In hypnosis, "What the mind wants, the body will do"!  Hypnosis has helped clients with stress and anxiety, fears and phobias, habits such as smoking and over eating, pain, sleeplessness, Crohn's disease, Irritable Bowel, sports performance and much, much more!

How long is a typical hypnosis session?

A typical hypnosis session lasts from one to one and a half hours. The first session tends to be a little longer as I the hypnotist reviews “what hypnosis is and is not”. Each session is one-on-one with a certified hypnotist.

What is self-hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is an individual setting aside some time to sit in a safe and quiet space, free of interruption. He then closes his eyes, takes a few deep, cleansing breaths, and relaxes himself into a calm, quiet and relaxed state of mind or hypnotic trance. There are countless books that assist the self-taught individual on how to do self-hypnosis. At Cooper Hypnosis, we offer a Mind-Body-Spirit self-hypnosis called 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®
